IT WAS NOT TO BE LIKE TO BIKE: The photographer must pay for the monkey's selfi
The court battle over the copyright on the selfi photograph of the
humpbacked macaque was terminated outside the court, by allowing the
photographer to donate a quarter of future photo revenues to
humanitarian groups that protect those animals. An
organization called "People for Ethical Relationships to Animals"
(PETA) sued a British photographer, David Slater, whose equipment
produced a controversial photo, and on behalf of the monkey in question -
Naruto. They claim that copyrights on the photograph belong to a monkey.
The federal judge in San Francisco, however, in January 2016, decided that animals could not be copyright holders. The
case took place in July before a senior court case, but the two sides,
after reaching an agreement, asked to dismiss the sad one. The chief PETA adviser said he was happy that the agreement reached
with the photographer would be helped by macaques, which are on the list
of endangered animals.
